SITE TWO- BUZZING CITY

THIRD GRADE ARTISTS AND PERFORMERS

Students of rooms 202 and 103

Ms. Kamil, Ms. Duffy, Ms. Harbottle, Ms. Parker, Jenna Deidel

For EARTH ARCADE, the third grade students have been developing art and performance as scientists, artists, and community members.  We focused on the behaviors of communities, how people (and insects) work together in our city.

Third grade has developed peek shows based in metaphors about Chicago (i.e. "The city is like the mountains because the buildings are so tall.")  The students turned the Chicago metaphors into collaged scene inside of bee boxes.  Bees are another kind of community we explored to create the work.

For our installation we made:

  • city collages
  • spining boxes
  • bee keeper hats
  • our own music
  • paper machie hives
  • bee puppets
  • a game for our audience to play

QUESTIONS TO READ BEFORE VISITING EARTH ARCADE AND ANSWER AFTER YOU EXPERIENCE THE EVENT-

What did you experience at this site (see, hear, smell, taste, touch)?

What are three words you would use to describe the installation?

What kinds of communities did you see?

What is the message of this installation?  What is it trying to tell us?
